The 2023 WTA Finals is about to come to its sparkling conclusion. After a week’s worth of entertainment, the winner of the 2023 WTA Finals will be crowned, and the player will receive a significant boost in prize money and ranking points. Iga Swiatek will face Jessica Pegula, and the two will certainly give us a match to remember.
The conditions have been arduous in Cancun, and players have had to struggle day in and day out. The winds and the rain have often disrupted the matches, but the two resilient top players have eventually managed to overcome all the problems and make their way to the finals.
Iga Swiatek vs Jessica Pegula: Preview
Swiatek is currently in blazing form. She started the year a bit slowly but caught up after reaching two Masters finals. She followed it up with winning her third French Open title. However, she seemed to lose her momentum in the American swing and stumbled out of the US Open in Round 4 shock defeat.
However, she managed to return with a bang and won the China Open title. The former World No. 1 will be going into the Finals undefeated from the round-robin stages and also having beaten the current top-ranked player, Aryna Sabalenka.
The American player has not had the same year as her opponent. She made it into the quarterfinal of two Grand Slams and the semifinals of two Masters tournaments. But she managed to turn her luck around before the American Slam and won the Canadian Open by defeating Swiatek on the way. Similar to her opponent, Jessica Pegula will also go into the tournament finals undefeated and has had immense momentum after beating fellow compatriot and doubles partner, Coco Gauff.
Swiatek vs Pegula: Head-To-Head
The two finalists have met each other eight times in total across their careers. They first met in 2019 in Washington, and their first bout was won by Pegula. They wouldn’t meet each other till 2022 in the Miami Open semifinal, where Swiatek took her revenge. Roland Garros would house their next bout, which would be won by the Polish once again in straight sets.
They would also meet in the quarterfinal of the 2022 US Open, where Swiatek would emerge victorious and go on to win the slam. Their next bout would be in San Diego, and it was also won by Swiatek for a fourth consecutive win over Pegula. The American player managed to beat her Polish opponent in the 2023 United Cup.
They would play each other two more times, in the Doha final, where Swiatek would win, and the Canadian Open, which Pegula would cinch. At present, their H2H record stands at 3-5 in the Pole’s favor.
Prediction: Swiatek to clinch the victory in three sets
Both players have been in outstanding form for the last week in Cancun. Both have entered the final undefeated, but the American player is likely to fall to her Polish opponent. Swiatek is leading their head-to-head, but her mindset following her China Open win has helped her gain immeasurable momentum. Additionally, she will be playing to become the world number 1, as a victory will put her ahead of Sabalenka in the year-ending overall points.
The final match is bound to be exciting, but one player will unfortunately go home with the tag of the runner-up. Pegula has a much higher chance of being given the tag than her opponent. What are your thoughts on the clash? Let us know in the comments below!
