Tonight’s episode of ‘My 600-lb Life’ deals with Travis Henry from Texas. Morbidly obese, he weighs around 600 pounds and depends on his wife Yasmin and mother to take care of him.
Frustrated with his enormous frame, Henry says if he gets to a point where he can’t bathe, he would give up. Though he feels stuck and stagnant in his life, Henry hasn’t been able to keep himself away from food.
He enjoys eating and looks forward to it every moment. And, when he starts to eat, a wave of happiness comes over him. Henry says his toxic habit has been able to take away the pain from him.
However, Henry’s weight traces its roots back to his childhood, which was quite normal until his parents fell apart. He grew up watching them constantly fight, which took a toll on his mental and physical health. Stricken by loneliness, he found comfort in food.
And when Henry’s brother moved out following their parents’ separation, he felt betrayed. He had nowhere to go or no one to turn to when even his father refused to accept him.
When he was in high school, he saw himself grow bigger by the day. By the time he was 15, Henry weighed over 300 pounds.
When his mother tried stopping him from eating, concerned about his deteriorating health, Henry found ways to sneak food, including stuffing it in his cheek to chew on later.
Gained a couple of 100 pounds in school. Close to 300 by 15. He used to sneak food or hide food in his cheek. Always found a way around food. And, when he turned 16, he received his driver’s license, which further enabled him to eat more as he could drive around himself to find food.
When his fiancée left him just a month after getting engaged and his father refused to reconnect with him, Henry's dependency on food only increased many folds. He weighed over 460 pounds when he was 20.
Although life changed for good for Henry after meeting Yasmin, whom he is now married to, his unhealthy relationship with food remained the same. He and Yasmin haven’t had a formal wedding as they couldn’t find a tux that fit his humongous body.
Henry along with his wife and mother decided to move to Dallas on hearing about Dr Younan Nowzaradan. Henry says as Yasmine and his mother have started to lose their patience with him, weight-loss surgery is the only option that could put his life back on track.
‘My 600-lb Life’ airs on Wednesdays on TLC.
